The recent developments in the case of the genetically modified Pioneer 1507 maize crops are indicative of how far the Εuropean Union has descended towards becoming an autocratic regime that is controlled by multinational corporations.
The crops have been developed by the chemical giant Dupont, to be resistant to the pesticide glufosinate ammonium which will be banned in the EU in 2017 due t its toxicity. In addition there are strong concerns that the Bt toxin Cry1F, that is produced by the genetically engineered crops, is harmful to butterflies, moths soil organisms and the environment. Cry1F is a different and more potent toxin than the previously tested and approved Cry1Ab/Ac toxin and is expressed at 350 higher levels. In a move that defies any scientific principle, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated the safety of Cry1F with data from studies conducted with Cry1Ab/Ac.
Despite most EU countries voting against the approval of the Dupont GM crops, Germany's suspicious abstention from the vote nullified the will of the remaining countries and vested the approval decision with the EU commission - a non-transparent and non-democratic organization of bureaucrats who serve the interests of big corporations. The Commission has already ruled that the crops are safe, despite the concerns over the harm to the health of wildlife and humans.
These events highlight the power that Germany wields over the EU and the absolute mockery of any democratic procedure for a multinational institution that boasts to be its greatest champion!
