NATO was created as a military alliance to defend against the expansion of communism driven by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Following the global collapse of Communism and the Soviet Union, NATO infiltrated the Eastern bloc and had to reinvent itself as a global force promoting security and stability against ideological and political extremism.
Yesterday the secretary general of the Alliance announced plans to establish permanent NATO bases at the borders with Russia in order to avert Russian expansionism, while modernizing the military of Ukraine - a country that is not a NATO member!
These plans raise the question of whether NATO has completely lost is purpose.
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union was actively promoting the global spread of its extreme political system and precipitating military conflicts around the globe, in Greece, Korea, Vietnam, South America, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Today the situation is completely reversed.
Russia is governed by a democratically elected government and runs a social capitalist economic system. Naturally is offers military support to defend ethic Russians who ended up in the wrong side of the border after the collapse of the Soviet Union in Ukraine and Georgia. But otherwise, all Russia wants is to do business. Export its energy at a fair price and buy goods from Europe and China. And many other countries want to do business with Russia, the richest country in the world when it comes to natural resources.
Instead, the US is using NATO to promote certain business interests, by overthrowing the secular governments in the Arab world, training, arming and organizing Islamic fundamentalists to wreck havoc in Syria, Iraq, Egypt and Lybia into chaos. Through these actions NATO has demolished its role of fighting against terrorism as the US is the major sponsor of terrorist groups such as ISIS.
Today the US, followed by the EU, is main threat to global peace and economic prosperity. American officials will have a hard time bullying NATO allies into accepting that Russia is a threat worth jeopardizing their economic interests and spending valuable military resources and human personnel to antagonize Russia, in order to promote American business ventures in Eastern Europe.
This could finally spell the collapse of NATO. Amen!
